Richard Reed Parry — Quiet River of Dust Vol 1

Quiet River of Dust is two volumes of music by Richard Reed Parry. Each volume represents one side of a river, two distinct worlds that are both connected. For Vol. 1, I created a miniature model of a landscape of an enchanted forest in Japan. Inspired by Parry’s references to the seasons, Japanese death poems and the folk music of the British Isles, she collaged elements from a variety of found imagery, some provided by Parry, which included old family photographs and VHS video stills. These elements were encapsulated in 3D bubbles, alluding to floating memories and communication between the living and the spirit world. Vol. 2 is more interior, dealing with the murky waters of memory and the unconscious mind. She reflected on this underwater feeling, mysterious tone and seasonal shift from summer to winter by covering the surface of a new miniature model of a landscape with slow growing salt crystals that mimic ice and snow. Both mininature models were also used in a 360° immersive live performance at the Society for Arts and Technology (Montreal, QC).
